Prime Minister Modi Celebrates Record Solar Capacity Addition in India

New Delhi, April 10: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his happiness on Friday regarding a significant achievement in India’s solar energy sector. The country has set a record for the highest annual solar capacity addition to date.

In a post on the social media platform X, the Prime Minister commented on a piece by Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, highlighting this milestone in the renewable energy sector.

Joshi noted that India added approximately 45 gigawatts (GW) of solar capacity in 2025-26, nearly double that of the previous year. This positions India as one of the fastest-growing clean energy markets globally.

He emphasized that this achievement reflects the country’s commitment to energy security, sustainable development, and the goal of a ‘Developed India.’ States like Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra played a crucial role in this progress, implementing large-scale solar projects.

In March 2026 alone, 6.65 GW of solar capacity was added, marking the highest monthly addition to date. This showcases improved performance in utility-scale and distributed solar projects.

The achievement also indicates advancements in domestic manufacturing, grid integration, and policy support. India has already surpassed 150 GW of solar capacity, which is expected to further strengthen the renewable energy sector and assist in reducing carbon emissions in the industry.

With the continuous growth of solar projects by states, there is an anticipated increase in investments in transmission networks, battery storage, green hydrogen, and solar equipment manufacturing. This will also create export opportunities for modules, inverters, and other equipment.

Meanwhile, the Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited presented a dividend check of ₹115 crores to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, reflecting the sector’s strong financial position.

Joshi also mentioned that according to the International Renewable Energy Agency’s ‘Renewable Energy Statistics 2026,’ India has now surpassed Brazil to become the third-largest country in the world in terms of installed renewable energy capacity.

He added that in July 2025, India achieved the highest share of renewable energy in electricity generation, with 51.5 percent of the total demand of 203 GW coming from renewable sources.

Additionally, by March 31, 2026, the country had established a total capacity of 283.46 GW from non-fossil fuel sources.
