Three Talaq Ban Brings Relief to Muslim Women: Haseen Mastan

Mumbai, 24 January: Haseen Mastan, daughter of underworld don Haji Mastan, praised the Indian Government’s decision to ban the practice of triple talaq, calling it beneficial for the Muslim community. Speaking on Saturday, she welcomed the legislation as a significant step towards justice for Muslim women.

Discussing the progress in her legal battle against her ex-husband, Haseen Mastan said, “I had filed a case against my ex-husband but did not have the financial means to fight it in court. During this difficult time, I met lawyer Ashish Verma, who took up my case. Within a week, the writ petition was filed. I have full faith in the judiciary and believe justice will be served soon.”

She further appealed for justice, stating, “I now have complete hope. As I mentioned, I trust the judiciary and the legal system. Earlier, I did not have the right lawyer, but now Ashish and other lawyers have come as angels to help me. The Government is also involved, and even the Prime Minister is aware of my case.”

Haseen Mastan revealed the hardships she endured, including forced child marriage and attempts of sexual assault. “How can anyone marry a 12-year-old girl? The person I was married to abused me, killed my child, and caused severe mental trauma, leading me to attempt suicide. He divorced me without any support and erased my identity. When my mother was alive, she was not allowed to speak for me in court. I faced immense mental harassment,” she said.

Commenting on the ban of triple talaq, she said, “This has been very beneficial. In Islam, the issue of ‘triple talaq’ was being misused. People were divorcing wrongly, which was not according to true Islamic teachings. When Prime Minister Modi noticed this misuse, he took serious note and handled the matter with great care. This has brought relief to women, and now people understand that talaq cannot be misused in this way.”

She also appreciated the Government’s support, stating, “If there was any anti-Muslim sentiment, I would not be here today. I wouldn’t have reached the PMO office, nor would Bihar MP Pradeep Kumar Singh have helped me.”

Haseen Mastan concluded with a message of humanity over religion: “Humanity comes first, then religion. Whether you are Hindu or I am Muslim, what difference does it make? Religion comes later. We are all humans. If someone is hurt or in pain, we should not say they are Hindu or Muslim. They are a human and deserve to be treated as such.”
