Greensboro, August 9: Indian-American golfer Sahith Theegala has dropped out of the top 10 after scoring 1-under 69 in the third round of the Wyndham Championship. He is now tied for 11th place heading into the final round of this last event before the FedExCup playoffs.
Theegala started the tournament strong with an impressive 8-under 62, placing him second on the leaderboard. However, consecutive rounds of 69 have pushed him back, leaving him at 10-under after 54 holes.
The 27-year-old player began Saturday with a fast start, securing three birdies in his first five holes. Unfortunately, bogeys on the sixth, 13th, and 14th holes disrupted his rhythm, bringing him back to even par. Theegala regained momentum with back-to-back birdies on the 15th and 16th holes, but lost another shot on the 18th, finishing the round with a score of 69.
Another Indian-origin player, Aaron Rai, also scored 3-under 69, placing him tied for 56th at 5-under. Akshay Bhatia and Sudarshan Yellamraju opted to rest before the FedExCup playoffs. At the top of the leaderboard, Beau Hossler and Michael Brennan are tied for the lead with a score of 16-under 194 before the final round.
Hossler managed to score 4-under 66 despite challenging par putts and two weather-related delays. Brennan finished with a score of 63, capping his round with a birdie putt from 15 feet on the last hole. Both players hold a one-shot lead over Scottish Open winner Tom Kim, who also scored 63, while Alex Noren and Alex Smalley are just one shot behind with scores of 65.
Currently ranked 122nd in the FedExCup standings, Hossler must win the tournament to mathematically qualify for the playoffs. His streak of 31 holes without a bogey ended at the par-3 16th hole due to a 30-foot three-putt after a 30-minute delay caused by bad weather.
Jordan Smith from England, ranked 68th in the FedExCup standings, strengthened his position by scoring a hole-in-one on the 16th hole with a 9-iron shot directly into the cup. He received 1 million reward points from the tournament sponsor, Wyndham, for this achievement. Keegan Bradley, who barely made the cut, also scored 1-under 69 but remains in 72nd place and needs a low score in the final round to improve his position.
Meanwhile, Brooks Koepka will not advance in the playoffs, as he is 11 shots behind the necessary qualifying position after scoring 74. The Wyndham Championship is the last opportunity to secure a spot in the FedExCup playoffs, and Theegala aims to finish the regular season on a high note with an impressive performance in the final round.
