New Delhi, August 9: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with athletes who won medals for India at the Commonwealth Games 2026 on Sunday. Sharing a video with the players, PM Modi expressed, “Play and shine… always cheer for India.”
The video began with boxer Sakshi Chaudhary, who won gold in the women’s 51 kg category. She stated, “Hello friends, I am Sakshi Chaudhary… Today, we are honored to be invited by our esteemed Prime Minister. We feel very proud and are delighted to meet him. He is very humble.”
Following this, PM Modi reiterated, “Play and shine, always cheer for India.” He concluded his remarks with a spirited chant of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” alongside the athletes.
India secured a total of 39 medals at the Commonwealth Games 2026, comprising 13 gold, 17 silver, and 9 bronze medals, placing fourth in the medal tally.
Among the medalists, 23 male athletes earned 23 medals, including 5 gold, 13 silver, and 5 bronze. Meanwhile, female athletes won 16 medals, which included 8 gold, 4 silver, and 4 bronze.
Indian boxers showcased exceptional talent, with all 10 boxers winning medals, including 7 gold and 3 silver. In athletics, the country claimed a total of 16 medals (3 gold, 7 silver, and 6 bronze). Additionally, India excelled in both athletics and para-athletics, securing 16 medals.
This edition also marked a significant achievement in judo, with four judokas winning medals. For the first time, India clinched gold in judo at the Commonwealth Games, with Asmita Day (women’s 48 kg) and Harsh Singh (men’s 60 kg) both winning gold on the same day.
