Quetta, February 22: After years of waiting and relentless struggle, the hope of 80-year-old Amma Hoori to see her missing son again has come to an end. On February 16, while waiting for her son’s return, she bid farewell to the world. Amma Hoori has become a symbol for the hundreds of mothers in Balochistan suffering the consequences of Pakistani policies and collective punishment.
A report published on Saturday revealed that the pain of mothers like her has now become part of a collective political consciousness, shaping perceptions between the Baloch population and the Pakistani state.
According to a report by ‘The Balochistan’, Amma Hoori faced homelessness, endured government oppression, and tirelessly campaigned against enforced disappearances. She repeatedly appealed to government institutions for justice and the return of her son. Enduring hardships for years, she passed away still holding onto hope.
The report further noted that among the thousands reported missing from Balochistan is Amma Hoori’s son, Gul Muhammad Marri, who was allegedly forcibly disappeared in 2012. Even at 80, Amma Hoori participated in protests in Islamabad and Quetta, demanding the recovery of missing persons. Many mothers across Balochistan continue their efforts, while the state denies allegations of enforced disappearances.
According to a report from Pakistan’s leading daily, Dawn, Bibi Hoori, affectionately known as ‘Amma Hoori’, challenged social norms by demanding justice on the streets, in courts, and at police stations.
Dawn quoted Nasrullah Baloch, chairman of Voice for Baloch Missing Persons, stating that she would visit camps for missing persons with her son’s daughter. Following her passing, a short video of her words has circulated on social media.
In the video, she expressed, “I have no news of my son. Is he alive or dead? I have been on the streets for 14 years… I have grown old. People hold my hand when I get off vehicles, but I protest here to seek justice.”
