The Health Benefits of Mulberries: A Summer Delight

New Delhi, March 21: As summer approaches, juicy fruits start appearing in markets. Alongside watermelon and cantaloupe, mulberries also make their seasonal debut in March and April. However, they are available for only a limited time.

Known in other languages as ‘toot’ or ‘mulberry,’ this fruit is celebrated not just for its taste but also for its health benefits. The mulberry tree is renowned for its succulent berries, leaves, and medicinal properties.

In Ayurveda, the bark, fruit, and roots of the mulberry are considered treasures of health. For centuries, they have been used to treat various ailments, including cough, fever, and diabetes. The juicy berries are rich in vitamin C, iron, and antioxidants, which help boost immunity and aid digestion. In Ayurveda, they are considered beneficial for balancing the body’s doshas and purifying the blood. Their sweet and tangy flavor helps maintain balance in the body.

The decoction and powder made from the bark are also beneficial for various health issues, but it is advisable to consult a physician before consumption.

Mulberries possess anti-aging properties that can reduce the effects of aging and prevent wrinkles. They are also beneficial for treating blemishes and dryness on the skin, giving the face a fresh glow and improving eyesight. Being a rich source of vitamin A, they enhance vision.

Additionally, mulberries have antibacterial and antifungal properties that protect the skin from external infections. They can also serve as a remedy for conditions like eczema and psoriasis. With a low glycemic index, mulberries can be consumed by diabetics as they help regulate blood sugar levels and are high in iron. Regular consumption can aid in replenishing blood and preventing anemia.
