New Delhi, March 20: Both meals and fruits are essential for the body. In today’s changing lifestyle, serving fruits alongside meals at weddings, parties, and hotels has become common. Many people, regardless of age, consume fruits with their meals without a second thought, but Ayurveda does not endorse this practice.
From wedding functions to restaurants, fruits are often served with meals, and both children and the elderly do not hesitate to eat them together. However, is it appropriate to combine the two? Fruits served in hotels or at events are typically cold and may have been stored for a while. Such fruits can dampen digestive fire, leading to food fermentation in the stomach.
According to Ayurveda, cooked foods like lentils, bread, and rice take longer to digest, whereas fruits are softer and digest more quickly. When consumed together, these different types of food can ferment rather than digest properly, depriving the body of essential nutrients. This can lead to gas, constipation, heaviness, acidity, and an accumulation of toxins in the body, making it susceptible to diseases.
Optimal nutrition from both fruits and meals occurs when they are consumed at separate times. Both fruits and meals are considered pure foods, making it better to eat them separately. Ayurveda views food not just as a taste experience but as a science where timing, quantity, and combination are equally important.
Morning and evening are ideal times to eat fruits. You can consume fruits on an empty stomach in the morning, but it’s advisable to avoid sour fruits during this time, as they can increase gas and acidity.
In the evening, fruits can be enjoyed before sunset, but it is crucial to avoid eating them with milk or yogurt. Ayurveda considers this a contradictory combination, and it is recommended to wait about an hour after eating fruits before having a meal. Only after the fruits have digested should one proceed to eat.
