Essential Ayurvedic Guidelines for Eating Fruits

New Delhi, March 18: Ayurveda offers numerous guidelines for healthy living, including dietary practices. It emphasizes choosing food and lifestyle based on individual body types.

When it comes to fruits, Ayurveda suggests specific rules for consumption. Many people eat fruits whenever they feel like it. Some prefer juicing fruits instead of eating them whole. But do these methods provide complete nutrition?

According to Ayurveda, eating fruits is highly beneficial for health, but timing and method are equally important. Always opt for seasonal and ripe fruits, as unripe ones can increase body heat. The best time to consume fruits is between meals (morning or evening), and it’s advisable to eat one type of fruit at a time. Following these guidelines can enhance digestion, boost energy, and maintain overall health.

In the coming months, ripe mangoes will be readily available in the market. It’s best to consume ripe mangoes in the afternoon or evening, as they provide energy, while unripe mangoes can increase body heat. Unripe mangoes can be included in chutneys or cooked dishes. Bananas are available year-round and are commonly consumed, but it’s crucial to know who should limit their intake. Bananas can increase mucus in the body, so those with a mucus tendency should consume them in moderation.

For individuals with a Vata imbalance, dates and grapes (sour fruits) are beneficial. It’s also important not to eat fruits on an empty stomach; they should be consumed after breakfast. Fruits can be eaten until sunset.

Some people prefer to drink shakes instead of eating fruits, but combining fruits with milk can create an incompatible diet that leads to health issues rather than nourishment. Additionally, consuming fruit juices can increase sugar levels in the body. This is because juicing removes the fiber from the fruit, leaving behind filtered juice that may feel refreshing but lacks nutritional value.
