Mumbai, March 13: In the world of Hindi cinema, every aspiring actress dreams of becoming a leading star and shining alongside major superstars. However, reality often diverges from these aspirations.
Farida Jalal, who has graced Hindi cinema with her charming smile since the 1960s, experienced this firsthand. She began her career alongside Rajesh Khanna but did not achieve the recognition typically afforded to a leading actress.
Born on March 14, Farida Jalal always dreamed of becoming an actress, especially since her family had arranged her marriage at a young age. Breaking free from the constraints of her conservative upbringing, she entered Hindi cinema early on to carve out her identity. Few know that her film career began alongside Rajesh Khanna. Both were finalists in the Filmfare ‘United Producers Talent Hunt’ in 1965, selected by Filmfare itself. At that time, neither realized that their relationship would deepen significantly in the future.
Rajesh Khanna landed the film “Khatta Meetha,” while Farida Jalal debuted with “Takdeer.” They started their careers in separate films, but their romance in the diamond jubilee film “Aradhana” created a new dimension on screen. The song “Bagon Mein Bahar Hai” is now iconic, but did you know that Arun and Renu, the characters portrayed by Khanna and Jalal, barely spoke to each other off-screen?
In an interview, Farida Jalal revealed that Khanna was intoxicated by success at the time and was reluctant to work with new artists. He would often correct her during rehearsals and scold her for mistakes. Farida admitted that working with Rajesh Khanna was not easy, but after the film’s release and its success, their interactions improved, transforming initial bitterness into friendship.
Their bond grew to the extent that Khanna began calling her “Chhoti.” They collaborated again in the films “Bhola-Bhala” and “Talash” in 1969. Their relationship deepened to the point where Farida would playfully annoy Khanna on set. He had a penchant for wearing white kurta-pajamas and was particular about keeping them spotless, often not allowing anyone close to him. However, Farida would mischievously mess up his hairstyle, leaving him speechless.
