Thiruvananthapuram, June 4: A heated debate erupted in the Kerala Assembly on Thursday regarding the white paper on the state’s financial situation. Chief Minister V.D. Satheeshan and opposition leader Pinarayi Vijayan clashed over the document’s legitimacy.
The controversy began when Vijayan accused the government of not having the finance department prepare the white paper, labeling it a political document instead. This remark followed Satheeshan’s assertion that previous white papers had also included political elements.
Vijayan stated that the government should not expect the opposition to adhere to its methods. He further alleged that the process of drafting the white paper violated established rules. “It’s not just about following your policies. The question is whether the prescribed procedures were followed,” he emphasized.
In response, opposition members began chanting slogans in the assembly. Satheeshan countered Vijayan’s claims, suggesting that the opposition leader had formed his opinion without fully reading the white paper.
“The opposition leader has already made up his mind. Our approach to governance is different,” Satheeshan remarked, urging Vijayan to read the document thoroughly.
Former Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal also expressed objections to the white paper. He claimed that government documents were shared with outsiders during its preparation, which he argued was against established procedures. Balagopal insisted that sensitive financial documents should not be handled in such a manner and called for the assembly speaker’s intervention.
In reply to these accusations, the Chief Minister stated that no confidentiality was breached and that no sensitive documents had been leaked. “All these documents were publicly available beforehand. The report was prepared under the finance department’s leadership and approved by the cabinet, with only expert assistance for analysis,” he clarified.
Satheeshan asserted that the white paper assesses Kerala’s financial status and is not a political document. “The real question before us is the economic condition of Kerala. While previous white papers may have included political discussions, this document is not political,” he stated.
This intense debate is considered the first major confrontation between the government and opposition during the assembly session, turning the issue of the state’s financial crisis into a focal point of political discourse.
