Morigaon, September 22 (Daily Kiran) : Tensions erupted in Morigaon, Assam, on September 22, when clashes broke out between supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress party. The incident occurred when a group of BJP workers blocked the vehicle of Congress MLA Asif Nazr and shouted slogans against him.
Witnesses reported that the BJP supporters chanted “Asif Nazr, go back,” leading to a confrontation between the two political factions. The situation escalated quickly, resulting in a scuffle at the scene.
Upon receiving reports of the disturbance, Senior Superintendent of Police Nishant Saurabh arrived to assist in escorting the Congress MLA out of the area. Law enforcement managed to bring the situation under control after the initial chaos.
To prevent further escalation and maintain public order, police officers were deployed throughout the region. This clash follows a separate incident of violence that occurred the previous day during a Congress campaign rally in Samaguri, related to the upcoming by-election for the Nagao Lok Sabha seat.
On Monday, a Congress campaign convoy, which included Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Gaurav Gogoi and former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, was reportedly attacked with stones while en route to an election meeting in Samaguri. Congress leaders have accused BJP supporters of instigating the violence and have filed a complaint with the police, which the BJP has denied.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma commented that the Samaguri incident was a result of infighting within the Congress party. He advised the Congress leadership to address internal disputes rather than blame political opponents for the unrest.
Sarma emphasized that political differences should not lead to public disorder or violence. The recent clash in Morigaon has heightened political tensions in Assam, especially as campaigning intensifies for the Nagao Lok Sabha by-election scheduled for October 6.
The Congress party has nominated Sibamoni Bora as their candidate for the by-election, with senior leaders actively campaigning in the region. Authorities are on high alert in politically sensitive areas to prevent further clashes between rival party supporters.
