BSF Returns Two Bangladeshi Policemen After Accidental Border Crossing

Two Bangladeshi policemen were handed over by the BSF after mistakenly crossing into India during an anti-drug operation.

Agartala, October 16 (Daily Kiran) : Two Bangladeshi policemen were returned to their home country by the Border Security Force (BSF) after they accidentally crossed into India on Thursday night. The incident occurred near the Ashabadi border area in Tripura’s Sipahijala district. A flag meeting between the BSF and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) facilitated the handover on Friday.

The policemen, identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector Imran Hossain and Constable Rohit Dewan, are stationed at a police station in Bangladesh’s Comilla district. Officials reported that they were conducting an anti-drug operation near the international border when Constable Dewan pursued a suspected drug trafficker. In the process, he inadvertently entered Indian territory. Local residents detained him and subsequently handed him over to the BSF. Assistant Sub-Inspector Hossain also crossed into India in an attempt to retrieve his colleague.

After their detention, both officers spent the night under BSF custody at the Ashabadi border outpost, where they were interrogated. A flag meeting was held on Friday to discuss their return, attended by representatives from both the BSF and BGB, along with police and intelligence officials.

Following discussions, the Bangladeshi policemen were returned to their authorities. However, no detailed official statement explaining the circumstances of the incident or the handover was immediately available.

Tripura shares an 856-kilometer border with Bangladesh, making it particularly sensitive to issues of cross-border migration and smuggling. Most of the border is fenced to prevent illegal activities, with the exception of a 50-kilometer stretch that remains vulnerable to cross-border crime and infiltration.
