Hyderabad, February 13: The Telangana government has formally requested the central government to procure an additional 1.8 million tons of rice from the state. This appeal was made by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Minister for Civil Supplies, Uttam Kumar Reddy, during a meeting with Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Prahlad Joshi in New Delhi on Thursday.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister and the Civil Supplies Minister raised several critical issues related to rice procurement and outstanding dues. They urged the Union Minister to instruct the Food Corporation of India (FCI) to purchase the additional 1.8 million tons of rice acquired by the state during the 2025-26 Kharif (monsoon) season.
The Chief Minister noted that while the state had received approval for the procurement of 5.373 million tons of rice, the higher-than-expected yield led to the additional purchase of 1.8 million tons. The state has requested that the FCI accept this extra quantity with a tolerance of 10% broken rice.
For the 2024-25 Rabi (Yasangi) season, the Chief Minister has sought approval for the milling of an additional 1 million tons of boiled rice, with a 5% allowance for broken rice. He also requested an extension of the deadline for submitting Custom Milled Rice (CMR) related to the 2024-25 Kharif season by two months beyond February 28.
Additionally, the Chief Minister demanded the immediate release of ₹1,468.94 crore owed to the state for rice supplied to the FCI during the 2014-15 Kharif season. He explained that the burden of the additional levy purchase had been carried by the state government through loans, which have now accrued interest exceeding ₹2,000 crore.
Moreover, he requested the release of pending ₹343.27 crore for rice supplied under the Prime Minister’s Garib Kalyan Yojana (PMGKY) during the periods from May 2021 to March 2022 and in April 2022.
Present at the meeting were MPs Dr. Mallu Ravi and Suresh Shetkari, along with Rohit Singh, Additional Director of the State Civil Supplies Department, and Dr. Gaurav Uppal, Coordinator for Central Schemes.
