Driver Arrested After Hit-and-Run Incident in Sydney Leaves Pedestrian Seriously Injured

Sydney, August 23: A driver has been arrested following a hit-and-run incident in New South Wales, Australia, that occurred on Sunday afternoon. The incident took place approximately 22 kilometers northwest of Sydney’s Central Business District, specifically on Fernvale Avenue in Carlingford.

Emergency services were alerted around 12:30 PM local time after reports of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle. According to a statement from New South Wales police, a van collided with the pedestrian, and the driver allegedly fled the scene on foot.

Reports from the Xinhua news agency indicate that a 34-year-old pedestrian became trapped under the van. Emergency services successfully extricated the victim, who was then treated on-site by paramedics from NSW Ambulance. The individual was subsequently transported to the hospital in serious condition for further treatment.

Following a search in nearby bushes, police apprehended a 29-year-old driver, who was taken to the police station for questioning. Authorities have established a crime scene at the location and initiated an investigation into the incident.

This event follows a tragic series of road accidents in Queensland, where three individuals lost their lives within six hours on August 19. Queensland Police Service reported that a 27-year-old man died after his vehicle veered off the road and collided with a tree in a southern suburb of Brisbane.

Earlier that day, a 63-year-old woman was killed in a three-vehicle collision near the small town of Wamuran, located 50 kilometers north of Brisbane. She was one of two individuals standing outside their parked vehicles when a third car struck them.

Additionally, a 72-year-old woman died after her vehicle collided with a utility vehicle in the nearby town of Armstrong Creek around 1:55 PM. The driver of the utility vehicle, a 54-year-old woman, was taken to a Brisbane hospital with injuries.

According to the latest official statistics, 202 people have died on Queensland roads in 2026 so far, compared to 187 during the same period in 2025 and 2024. Police continue to investigate all three incidents from Wednesday.
