Telangana Government Seeks Central Assistance Amid Al Niño Crisis

Hyderabad, July 18: The Telangana government is facing a significant challenge due to a nearly 40% reduction in rainfall attributed to the Al Niño phenomenon. In response, the state government has decided to request the central government for financial assistance to evaluate the situation and implement emergency plans.

This decision was made during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Friday. Revenue, Information, and Public Relations Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy informed reporters that the cabinet has resolved to write to the central government regarding the current rainfall deficit and the effects of Al Niño.

The letter will detail the impact on crop production and related agricultural sectors, challenges related to drinking water and irrigation, and the plight of agricultural workers.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has instructed officials to promptly prepare alternative action plans related to drinking water, irrigation, agriculture, and power supply. Given the weather department’s warning that conditions may worsen in the coming days, he has directed all departments to remain prepared with proactive measures.

The cabinet has decided that district collectors must stay alert to prevent drinking water shortages, take appropriate measures, and address public complaints immediately. They have also resolved to ensure uninterrupted power supply without load shedding, directing officials to arrange for both power generation and procurement to meet this requirement.

Additionally, the cabinet prioritized the allocation of available water from all projects for drinking water needs. It has urged farmers to avoid cultivating water-intensive crops and to opt for those that consume less water. The government plans to conduct awareness seminars and meetings across the state regarding the effects of Al Niño.

Furthermore, it has been directed that the public be thoroughly informed about the current rainfall deficit, available water resources, and precautions to be taken by farmers. The cabinet has instructed that a special report on the impact of Al Niño on the agricultural sector be prepared by agricultural experts and scientists, led by the Vice Chairman of the State Planning Board, Chinna Reddy.

This report will include suitable crops for the current conditions, precautions for farmers, and measures for the care of crops and livestock.
