Coimbatore, April 18: Tejashwi Yadav, the Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Assembly and a prominent RJD leader, has condemned the central government for the failure of the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha. He emphasized that the opposition fully supports the bill, countering the BJP’s misleading narrative that only they advocate for women’s rights. “This is absolutely incorrect,” he stated.
During a media interaction in Coimbatore, Yadav noted that the Women’s Reservation Bill had already been unanimously passed in 2023, with the central government promising its implementation by 2034. He mentioned that delimitation is a separate issue, and the opposition prioritizes a caste-based census. “If delimitation is conducted based on new and updated data, it would be more effective,” he added.
Yadav accused the BJP of knowing that the bill would not pass. He claimed they introduced it merely to project themselves as supporters of women’s rights while portraying the opposition as unsupportive. “This is false,” he asserted.
He further alleged that the Modi government reintroduced the Women’s Reservation Bill amid assembly elections in five states as a political stunt filled with drama and propaganda. Yadav argued that the BJP is using women’s issues as a facade to fulfill its agenda of altering the Constitution, thereby undermining the sentiments and representation of women.
In a post, Yadav stated that the amendment bill, presented under the guise of the Women’s Reservation Bill, failed in the Lok Sabha today. This outcome demonstrates that public sentiment cannot be suppressed by a mere majority, and constitutional norms cannot be violated under the pretext of delimitation, which threatens the rights of opposition parties and regional balance.
He concluded that the opposition’s unity has proven that the democratic values of the country, the constitutional framework, and the rights of women from Dalit, backward, and minority communities will not be compromised.
Yadav stressed that this bill, introduced hastily and without all-party consensus or nationwide discourse, reveals the NDA government’s lack of solid moral and constitutional arguments.
