Patna, September 22 (Daily Kiran) : Tejashwi Yadav, the Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Assembly and the National Executive President of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), held a press conference on Tuesday to address law and order issues, particularly focusing on the recent incident in Jamui. He raised concerns about the safety of women and girls, urging Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary to resign in light of previous statements he made.
Yadav described the Jamui incident as extremely serious and shameful, insisting that those responsible must face severe penalties. He claimed that women and girls in Bihar feel increasingly unsafe and criticized some government officials for labeling such incidents as mere “isolated” occurrences. He stressed that these issues should never be normalized.
In discussing the Jamui case, Yadav questioned the police’s actions, noting that authorities reported seven to eight individuals were involved, and therefore, all should be prosecuted. On Tuesday, police apprehended the main suspect, Nandan Yadav, who was injured in a shootout. The police indicated that this confrontation occurred during an operation, and three other suspects had already been arrested. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to investigate further, as police continue searching for additional suspects.
Yadav also expressed skepticism regarding the circumstances of the shootout, demanding clarity from the government on how the encounter occurred and the procedures that were followed. He emphasized that while action against criminals is essential, accountability and transparency in such operations must also be ensured.
Additionally, he highlighted the need for an impartial investigation into the police’s role and the arrests made, asserting that all involved should be prosecuted according to the law, and the victim’s family should receive justice. Yadav pointed out that the Jamui incident, along with other recent cases of violence against women and girls, deserves serious attention. He claimed to possess news clippings from various newspapers and urged the government to disclose what actions have been taken in these matters.
During the press conference, Yadav also addressed the death of an inmate at the Sasaram jail. He alleged that the deceased was arrested in a prohibition case and later died in custody. Reports indicate that the inmate was sent to judicial custody on September 13 and died at a local hospital on September 15. Family members have accused the jail administration of negligence. The deceased’s uncle claimed that the family was informed of the inmate’s deteriorating health only to later learn of his death at the hospital.
The family is demanding a judicial inquiry, action against the jail superintendent, compensation, and a government job for a family member. Yadav referenced statistics regarding custodial deaths in Bihar, further criticizing the government for irregularities in transfers and postings.
He called for the government to ensure timely actions against crimes involving women and girls, as well as custodial deaths. Yadav urged the government to arrest all suspects in the Jamui case, provide protection for the victims, and establish accountability throughout the investigation.
