Mumbai, August 12: Indian badminton player Tanvi Sharma has made headlines by winning the Taipei Open at the young age of 17. In an exclusive interview, she expressed her surprise at achieving this remarkable feat. Tanvi stated that she did not expect to win the title but focused on giving her best effort throughout the tournament.
Reflecting on her victory, Tanvi shared, “I didn’t have any expectations. I was processing everything internally. I went in without the belief that I could win the title. I just aimed to give my 100 percent and played with full enthusiasm. After winning, I felt immense joy. However, my immediate goal was to prepare for the Super 500 and 750 events.”
Discussing the significance of her win, Tanvi noted, “Winning the Super 300 was crucial. It represents a good level of competition. Yet, there are more events like 500, 750, and 1000 that I need to prepare for.” She emphasized her commitment to hard work and improving her game, acknowledging that there are several areas where she needs to enhance her skills.
Tanvi credited her sister, Radhika, for her guidance and support throughout her training journey.
Her performance in the tournament was outstanding. In the women’s singles final, she defeated Vietnam’s Nguyen Thuy with a score of 21-16, 21-16, becoming only the second Indian player to win this title after Saina Nehwal. Additionally, she is now the youngest player to claim the Taipei Open title, ending a 17-year drought for India in this tournament.
