Lucknow, May 19: Congress MP Tanuj Puniya has criticized Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s comments regarding prayers on the streets. He stated that the BJP’s politics revolves solely around religion.
In a conversation in Lucknow, Puniya emphasized that their political agenda is driven by religious sentiments. He argued that regular religious gatherings on the streets should not be permitted, regardless of whether they are associated with Hindus, Muslims, or any other faith. He suggested that exceptions could be made for specific festivals or occasions, with appropriate arrangements in place.
Regarding the ongoing encounters in the state, Puniya raised concerns about the targeting of innocent individuals. He questioned the effectiveness of encounters, suggesting that it would be more beneficial to extract information about criminal networks from the offenders instead.
Senior Congress leader Ajay Kumar Lallu highlighted the alarming statistic that Uttar Pradesh ranks first in crimes against women. He questioned the identity of the criminals involved in these encounters. Lallu pointed out the tragic reality that daily wage laborers and traders are committing suicide due to debt. He urged the government to wake up to this pressing issue, stating that the state cannot be managed solely through cinematic dialogues. Concrete actions are needed for the welfare of the people.
It is noteworthy that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath recently remarked on the transformed image of Uttar Pradesh, contrasting it with its previous reputation for violence and crime. He claimed that the state is now recognized for advancements such as the BrahMos missile, defense corridors, expressways, international airports, and as a destination for investment. During this discussion, he advised the public on the issue of street prayers, issuing a warning as well.
Adityanath stated that due to improved law and order, infrastructure, and governance, Uttar Pradesh has moved from being one of the bottom two states to the top two. He declared a zero-tolerance policy towards chaos and disorder, asserting that those who harass women will face severe consequences. He made it clear that while prayers can be conducted in shifts, they cannot be allowed on the streets.
