Chennai, September 17 (Daily Kiran) : The political landscape in Tamil Nadu is heating up as the Madurantakam and Dharapuram assembly seats prepare for by-elections. A five-way contest appears imminent, with candidates from the ruling TVK, DMK, AIADMK, Naam Tamilar Katchi, and various leftist parties all set to compete.
The Madurantakam (SC) seat is located in Chengalpattu district, while Dharapuram (SC) is in Tiruppur district. Each of the major political parties has opted to field distinct candidates, resulting in a multifaceted electoral battle.
The deadline for filing nominations closed at 3 PM on Wednesday, with a total of 99 nominations submitted. This figure includes official candidates, alternative nominees, and independents.
Election officials conducted a thorough review of the nomination papers on Thursday to ensure compliance with legal and mandatory requirements. In Madurantakam, TVK candidate Maragatham Kumaravel, DMK’s Paranthaman, AIADMK’s Kanitha Sampath, Naam Tamilar Katchi’s Janakiraman, and CPI(M)’s Suganti had their nominations accepted.
Out of the 48 nominations filed in Madurantakam, 32 were approved, while 16 were rejected due to failure to meet one or more essential criteria.
In Dharapuram, TVK’s Satyabama, DMK’s Suganya, AIADMK’s Bhanumathi, Naam Tamilar Katchi’s Karthika, and CPI’s Lakshmanan also received valid nominations. A total of 51 nominations were reviewed in Dharapuram, with 22 accepted and 29 rejected for not adhering to the stipulated conditions.
The final count of candidates for both seats will be determined after the deadline for withdrawing nominations expires. Candidates who have received valid nominations can withdraw their names within the timeframe set by the Election Commission.
With separate candidates from the ruling party and the two major Dravidian parties, as well as Naam Tamilar Katchi and leftist groups, a robust election campaign is expected for both by-elections. The outcomes will be closely monitored as they may influence the political strength and organizational reach of the respective parties ahead of future contests.
