Chennai, October 10 (Daily Kiran) : In Chennai, leftist parties have announced a series of protests across various district headquarters in Tamil Nadu. This move comes in response to the recent arrests of senior communist leaders during demonstrations in Delhi, where they demanded the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
In a joint statement, these political parties condemned the actions of the Delhi police and paramilitary forces, alleging that they used force to prevent protesters from gathering at Jantar Mantar. They described this crackdown as an attack on democratic rights and urged their supporters to organize immediate protests.
The demonstrations were called by the Cockroach People’s Party (CJP), backed by leftist parties and civic organizations. They aimed to voice their demands for Kumar’s removal amid a broader campaign against him. Prior to the protests, authorities imposed extensive restrictions in the national capital.
According to the statement, those arrested in Delhi included MA Baby, General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), D. Raja, General Secretary of the Communist Party of India, and a leader from the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation.
The parties claimed that leaders of youth and student organizations, trade union activists, and other prominent figures were also detained. Many were held in police vehicles for hours, and both the arrests and treatment of detainees faced criticism.
They accused police and paramilitary forces of preventing groups from assembling at various locations and arresting individuals attempting to join the protests. The statement alleged that security forces surrounded the offices of political parties and civic organizations to restrict activists’ movements.
The parties reported that 254 trains heading to Delhi were canceled, 54 metro stations were closed, and 35,000 police officers were deployed. They argued that these measures were clear evidence of a concerted effort to disrupt participation in the protests.
Moreover, they accused authorities of ignoring the Supreme Court‘s remarks on peaceful protests, asserting that security measures should not infringe upon citizens’ democratic rights to assemble and express dissent.
The leftist parties held the central government accountable for the conduct of the Delhi police and the deployment of paramilitary forces. They called on party units and affiliated organizations across Tamil Nadu to unite at district headquarters to oppose these actions and reiterate their demand for Gyanesh Kumar’s removal.
The planned protests are expected to extend throughout the state, reflecting widespread discontent with the recent actions taken in the capital.
