Tamil Nadu Launches Singappen Special Task Force to Enhance Womens Safety

Chennai, June 10: The Tamil Nadu government is set to launch the first phase of the newly formed ‘Singappen’ Special Task Force across the state, starting Wednesday. This initiative aims to strengthen the safety and protection of women and children.

The plan includes a phased expansion of the all-women police units to a total of 270 across Tamil Nadu, initiated by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.

In the first phase, 70 Singappen units will begin operations statewide. Each district will have at least one unit, while Chennai, due to its size and population, will host 12 units at various locations.

The Greater Chennai Police area will have the highest number of these units. Four Singappen units will be deployed under the Tambaram and Avadi Police Commissionerates. Other police commissionerate areas in Tamil Nadu will have two units each to ensure a swift response to matters concerning women and children.

Each Singappen unit will initially consist of two female sub-inspectors and one female police constable, responsible for patrolling. The police department has selected 140 female sub-inspectors and 420 female officers from across the state to operate these units. They will work on a 24-hour rotation to ensure continuous police presence and prompt action.

The Singappen Special Task Force will primarily comprise female officers, with male officers assisting in driving and other support roles as needed.

The state government is also planning to establish a special contact system for women, including WhatsApp groups and mobile numbers, allowing them to seek help directly. In emergencies, women can contact the police emergency control room at helpline number 100.

For the new force, the government has approved the purchase of 319 four-wheelers and 101 two-wheelers. According to police officials, this initiative will enhance preventive policing, reduce response times, and contribute to creating a safer environment for women.
