Tamil Nadu Launches Singappen Task Force to Safeguard Women and Children

Chennai, June 10: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay inaugurated a special police unit, the ‘Singappen Task Force,’ on Tuesday to combat crimes against women and children. He emphasized that substance abuse is a primary factor behind many offenses targeting women and girls.

Speaking at the Rajarathinam Stadium in Egmore, Chief Minister Vijay reiterated the state government’s commitment to strengthening law and order and ensuring women’s safety. He noted that the growing issue of drugs has significantly contributed to crimes against women and girls.

“Substance abuse is a major cause behind nearly all crimes against women and girls. This problem has been overlooked for years, allowing it to deepen. To create a safe society, we must first eliminate this root cause,” he stated.

Vijay issued a stern warning to offenders, promising strict action against those committing crimes against women. The police will ensure prompt investigations, timely filing of charges, and effective prosecution of the guilty. He also instructed police officials to maintain fairness in law enforcement and avoid wrongfully implicating innocent individuals.

The state government has allocated ₹354 crore for the establishment and operation of the ‘Singappen Task Force.’ The initiative aims not only to respond to crimes but also to prevent them proactively.

The formation of this special task force was among the key promises made by Vijay after taking office on May 10. He signed the order for the creation of a dedicated unit for the safety of women and children immediately upon assuming his role.

The task force will be led by IG K. Bhavaneshwari, with special uniforms and distinct insignia designed for the unit. Officers at the levels of Superintendent of Police (SP), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Inspector, and Assistant Inspector will be deployed.

Additionally, the Chief Minister announced that the second phase of the task force will create 2,500 more positions, enhancing its presence and effectiveness across the state.

The primary goal of the ‘Singappen Task Force’ is to prevent crimes against women and create a safer environment for women and children in Tamil Nadu.
