New Delhi, August 30: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced on Sunday that the government has successfully disposed of approximately 2.16 crore metric tons of waste from the Okhla, Bhalswa, and Ghazipur landfills. This effort has reclaimed 100 acres of land.
She stated that this initiative has significantly improved the living environment for residents near these landfills.
For years, the mountains of waste have posed a major challenge for the people of Delhi. The government had pledged to remove them and has made substantial progress through a scientific roadmap, dedication, and a clear timeline.
The Chief Minister highlighted that the government is not only focused on removing existing waste but is also planning to prevent similar situations in the future.
In Okhla, around 7 million metric tons of waste have been processed, reclaiming 35 acres of land. In Bhalswa, approximately 10.2 million metric tons of waste have been managed, recovering 45 acres. Similarly, in Ghazipur, about 4.4 million metric tons of waste have been disposed of, reclaiming 20 acres.
Rekha Gupta emphasized that the removal of waste is not just about cleaning up; it positively impacts the lives of people living in these areas. Those who pass through these neighborhoods can now enjoy a cleaner environment, which enhances the quality of life for nearby residents.
A clean and improved environment promotes a healthier lifestyle. The Chief Minister noted that reclaiming such a large area from waste in the national capital is a significant achievement.
She also mentioned that the inert material recovered from waste disposal in Ghazipur is being utilized. This material is being used to fill low-lying areas and to prepare the base for roads.
This approach not only ensures scientific waste disposal but also makes use of the materials obtained in the process. The government’s strategy extends beyond solving current problems; it includes planning for future needs.
In this direction, preparations for establishing four new waste-to-energy plants in Delhi are complete.
Once these plants are operational, they will have the capacity to process the daily waste generated in Delhi at the same rate, ensuring that waste does not accumulate and new mountains of garbage do not form.
The government’s goal is to ensure that all waste generated in Delhi is processed daily.
