Tamil Nadu Increases Milk Procurement Price by ₹3 per Liter

Chennai, August 19: The milk procurement price in Tamil Nadu has been raised by ₹3 per liter. Chief Minister Joseph Vijay announced this increase under Rule 110 of the Assembly. With this adjustment, the procurement price now stands at ₹41 per liter.

In his statement, Chief Minister Joseph Vijay emphasized the cultural significance of cows, stating, “Our tradition holds that we revere cows as sacred. They provide milk not only for their calves but also for humans and many other beings, sustaining life.”

He noted that Tamil Nadu has 8,800 dairy cooperatives, supplying 3.16 lakh milk producers who deliver 34 lakh liters of milk daily. Through ‘Aavin’, 31 lakh liters of milk are distributed to customers each day. The procurement price for milk with 4.3% fat and 8.2% solids-not-fat (SNF) has been ₹35 per liter since November 2022. With the state incentive of ₹3 per liter, the total procurement price reaches ₹38 per liter.

CM Joseph pointed out that the previous government failed to adequately address the hard work of milk producers and the rising cost of labor. He stressed the need for the current government to support the livelihoods of dairy farmers and recognize their efforts by increasing the procurement price.

In his announcement, he stated, “To benefit over 3.16 lakh primary dairy producers supplying milk, the government has decided to raise the procurement price by ₹1 per liter through cooperatives and increase the state incentive from ₹3 to ₹5 per liter. Thus, the total procurement price will rise from ₹38 to ₹41 per liter.”

He added that this increase in procurement price will result in an additional monthly expenditure of ₹30 crore for the government, totaling ₹360 crore annually.
