Damascus, August 25: Syria has welcomed the United States’ decision to remove it from the list of state sponsors of terrorism. The Syrian government views this as a significant step towards ending decades of international isolation.
The Syrian Foreign Affairs Authority stated that this decision marks the beginning of a “new chapter in Syria’s international relations.” It is expected to aid the country’s economic recovery, create a better environment for reconstruction, and strengthen stability and security within Syria.
According to the Xinhua news agency, Tom Barrack, the U.S. special presidential envoy for Syria and Iraq, announced on Monday that Washington has formally removed Syria from the terrorism sponsors list.
Syria was added to this list in 1979, maintaining that status for several decades. The U.S. accused the then Syrian government of having ties with Hezbollah in Lebanon, certain Palestinian organizations, and Iran. The blacklist included countries like Iran, Cuba, and North Korea.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Basset stated, “The Treasury Department is fulfilling President Trump’s promise to provide the Syrian people with an opportunity to move forward. Today’s action will encourage additional investment in Syria and promote political and economic stability.”
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that these actions were taken in recognition of the positive steps taken by the Syrian government under President Ahmed al-Shara and its commitment to distancing itself from international terrorism.
He added, “In the past year, the Syrian government has taken several significant steps to combat terrorism.”
Tom Barrack emphasized that this designation had long kept the Syrian people away from the investments, businesses, and opportunities necessary for the country’s reconstruction. For too long, this status has separated the Syrian people from the essential investments, enterprises, and opportunities needed for rebuilding their nation. Today, another wall has fallen.
