Kolkata, August 13: Pakistani national Wahab Alam was arrested in Habra, located in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, while attempting to flee to Bangladesh. His plan involved spending some time in Bangladesh to assume a new identity and return to West Bengal for work.
During interrogation by the Special Task Force (STF), Alam revealed significant information. Sources indicate he was sent by Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the ISI, to gather intelligence on the Indian Army, Navy, and railways in the eastern part of the country.
Alam disclosed that his handlers in Pakistan advised him to temporarily relocate to Bangladesh. The STF also uncovered information about an ISI agent named Pavel, who is currently active in Jessore, Bangladesh. After fleeing to Bangladesh, Alam was supposed to meet Pavel, who was tasked with arranging a safe haven for him. Following this, he was to receive information about new job opportunities in West Bengal before being sent back to the state.
Alam admitted that his name was removed from the voter list following the SIT’s actions earlier this year, prior to the West Bengal Assembly elections. This prompted him and his handlers in Pakistan to become more cautious. They advised him to leave Topsia, where he was previously registered as a voter, and to hide in a bordering district of West Bengal until he could safely cross into Bangladesh.
As part of this plan, he chose to take refuge in Habra, where he was ultimately arrested by the STF. Based on Alam’s interrogation, the STF also apprehended his local associate, Mohammad Ijaz, in Topsia.
Investigations revealed that Wahab Alam was living as a tenant at Ijaz’s residence in Topsia. Ijaz assisted Alam in obtaining fake Indian identity documents, including an Aadhaar card, PAN card, and ultimately a voter card.
Wahab Alam entered India via the India-Nepal border in 2012 and had been changing his location within the state since then.
