New Delhi, August 13: Opposition leader Mallikarjun Kharge addressed a public gathering in Haldwani recently. Following his speech, some individuals attempted to purify the stage he had used. This incident drew condemnation from both Leader of the House JP Nadda and Chairman CP Radhakrishnan, who assured that an investigation would take place.
During his address in the Rajya Sabha, Kharge expressed, “Sir, it is with great sorrow that I mention I spoke at a public gathering in Ramleela Maidan, Haldwani, where millions were present. I did not mention any community or religion; I only discussed the issues faced by the people. However, after my speech, BJP members performed a ritual to purify the stage. Is this democracy? We have a constitution.”
Kharge added, “I never intended to make this a political issue. I have been in this house for many years, and I have never acted in such a manner. I am a concerned individual and a Dalit, but I have never sought help or protection by making such claims. I have the strength to fight, yet you treat me as untouchable and disrespect me through purification rituals. This is truly unfortunate.”
In response, Nadda stated, “What Kharge Ji has mentioned is indeed a very sad matter. This is unfortunate not only for the Congress party but for all of us. Kharge Ji claimed BJP members were involved. I want to clarify that both the National President and I, as a former National President, do not support such activities. We will investigate this matter thoroughly. I assure you that whatever occurred will be examined. I condemn this behavior, and the National President will also look into it deeply. The hurt caused to your sentiments is regrettable for all of us.”
Nadda emphasized, “I have already stated that the BJP does not support such activities. This is a matter of concern for all of us and for the nation. We will investigate. However, Kharge Ji, it is inappropriate to say, ‘You did this, you did that.’ We have clearly stated that we do not support such activities. Whoever is responsible must face consequences. Please do not politicize this issue. I share your sorrow, as I too feel the same.”
He continued, “I stand with you in these sentiments. But if you say, ‘You did this,’ it is not right. We are committed to investigating this matter thoroughly. If anyone is found guilty, action will be taken.” Nadda expressed respect for Kharge and his feelings, urging him not to politicize the issue further.
Chairman CP Radhakrishnan also condemned the incident, stating, “We all, regardless of our political affiliations or ideologies, denounce untouchability. No one should feel the need to purify us repeatedly. I urge the government to investigate those who committed this wrongdoing, apprehend them, and ensure they are punished. There is no room for doubt in this matter.”
