Suvendu Adhikari Sworn in as MLA from Bhawanipur, Resigns from Nandigram

Kolkata, May 13: Suvendu Adhikari, the newly elected Chief Minister of West Bengal, took his oath as an MLA from the Bhawanipur assembly constituency on Wednesday afternoon. By doing so, he confirmed his decision to resign from his position as MLA for the Nandigram assembly constituency in East Midnapore district. Adhikari was elected from both Bhawanipur and Nandigram in the recently concluded West Bengal assembly elections.

In Bhawanipur, Adhikari defeated the Trinamool Congress candidate and former Chief Minister by a margin of over 15,000 votes. In Nandigram, he won against Trinamool Congress’s Pabitra Kar by more than 9,000 votes. This marks the second time Adhikari has triumphed over Mamata Banerjee, having previously defeated her in 2021 by nearly 2,000 votes in Nandigram.

Following the 2021 elections, Mamata Banerjee won a by-election in Bhawanipur, securing her position as Chief Minister for a third consecutive term. However, in 2026, not only did her party, the Trinamool Congress, face defeat, but she also suffered a personal loss.

Similar to Suvendu Adhikari, Humayun Kabir, the founder of the Udayan Party (AJYUP), was elected from two assembly constituencies, Naoda and Rejinagar, both located in the minority-dominated Murshidabad district. It remains unclear which seat he will retain and which he will relinquish.

On Wednesday, Suvendu Adhikari entered the assembly premises, bowing his head and touching the steps as a sign of respect. He was welcomed by the acting Speaker and BJP MLA Tapas Roy from the Maniktala assembly constituency in North Kolkata.

During the ceremony, the new Chief Minister was given a guard of honor in the assembly premises. Following this, he paid homage at the statue of B.R. Ambedkar and offered flowers. He then proceeded to his designated chamber within the assembly, where he performed rituals before the idols of deities.

Later, he entered the assembly chamber and took his oath as the MLA from Bhawanipur. The oath-taking ceremony for the elected MLAs began on Wednesday and will continue into Thursday.
