Chennai, September 5 (Daily Kiran) : In Chennai, Tamil Nadu, a concerning rise in dengue and swine flu cases has been reported, prompting health officials to recommend heightened precautions. According to data from the public health department, between January 1 and August 30, 2026, the state recorded 13,573 dengue cases and nine fatalities.
Despite the relatively low mortality rate, health experts are alarmed by the significant increase in infections during July and August. The numbers reveal a troubling trend: in January, there were 1,722 cases, followed by 1,322 in February, 1,228 in March, 1,201 in April, and 1,062 in May. A resurgence began in June with 1,384 cases, escalating to 2,339 in July and 3,315 in August.
This year’s figures starkly contrast with last year’s data. In July 2025, there were 1,880 dengue cases, which surged to 2,339 in July 2026. Similarly, August saw a jump from 1,832 cases last year to 3,315 this year.
Chennai has reported the highest number of cases, accounting for 2,584 of the total infections. Coimbatore follows with 1,999 cases. The increase in dengue cases raises alarms, especially with the monsoon season approaching.
Last year, Tamil Nadu recorded 25,533 dengue cases, a significant reduction compared to the spikes seen between 2022 and 2024. Additionally, swine flu cases have also surged, with over 1,500 reported this year, making Tamil Nadu the second-highest state for swine flu infections in the country.
Health data indicates a marked rise in cases, particularly during June, July, and August. Notably, swine flu cases in August escalated from just 46 in 2025 to 645 in 2026.
Government doctors attribute the outbreak to high population density in Chennai and insufficient adherence to public health precautions. They advise that individuals suffering from swine flu should isolate for at least five days. Those experiencing fever or respiratory issues are urged to avoid crowded places, wear masks when necessary, and seek medical advice promptly.
To combat dengue, officials stress the importance of eliminating stagnant water and potential mosquito breeding sites around homes and workplaces. Doctors emphasize that maintaining cleanliness, controlling mosquito populations, raising public awareness, and timely treatment are crucial to preventing further infections in the upcoming rainy months.
