Surge in Chandipura Virus Cases in Gujarat: Death Toll Reaches 23

Gandhinagar, August 8: Concerns are rising in Gujarat over the Chandipura virus outbreak. According to the latest data released by the state health department, there have been 217 suspected cases reported from June 30 to August 8. Out of these, 39 cases have been confirmed, and the death toll has reached 23.

The health department stated that laboratory tests for most of the suspected cases have been completed. Reports for 208 out of 217 samples have been received, while results for 9 samples are still pending.

An increase in cases has been noted following intensified surveillance and testing efforts in the state. Previously, on July 14, the health department reported 27 suspected cases, of which 7 were confirmed, 12 returned negative, and results for 8 were awaited. During that phase, three children infected with the virus lost their lives.

The first cases of this outbreak emerged from the Panchmahal district, where two young children from two villages in the Godhra taluka died after contracting the virus.

In response to these cases, the health department has ramped up house-to-house surveys and pesticide spraying campaigns in the affected areas. Officials have deployed hundreds of health workers in Panchmahal district to conduct health checks and collect samples from residents.

By mid-July, there was a further increase in suspected cases, with reports coming in from various districts across the state.

Experts indicate that the Chandipura virus primarily spreads through sandflies and can lead to acute encephalitis syndrome, particularly in children. Timely identification and treatment are crucial, as the disease can escalate rapidly.

In a briefing during the first week of August, there were reports of 184 suspected cases, 35 confirmed infections, and 22 deaths. The latest figures show an increase in both suspected and confirmed cases, as well as fatalities.

The health department has confirmed that monitoring, testing, and sample collection processes are ongoing throughout the state. All eyes are now on the 9 pending reports, which will clarify how many more infections are confirmed among the suspected cases.
