New Delhi, February 4 – The Supreme Court will hear several petitions challenging the validity of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in West Bengal on Wednesday. Among these is a petition filed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) of political bias and adopting an authoritarian approach in conducting the SIR.
According to the cause list uploaded on the Supreme Court’s website, a bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M. Pancholi, will take up the matter on Wednesday.
In her petition, Chief Minister Banerjee questioned the legitimacy of the SIR process and alleged that the manner in which it is being carried out could disenfranchise millions of voters, especially those belonging to marginalized sections of society.
She claimed that the Election Commission, a constitutional body expected to uphold fairness and democratic values, has reached a troubling position by acting with political intent. Banerjee has sought direct intervention from the Supreme Court and requested appropriate directions to be issued to the Election Commission.
Earlier, Trinamool Congress leaders, including Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra, Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien, and Dola Sen, had also approached the Supreme Court challenging the SIR process in West Bengal. These petitions were listed for hearing before the same bench on Tuesday.
The development is significant as Mamata Banerjee had met Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar at the ECI headquarters in New Delhi on Monday to raise objections regarding the SIR. Following the meeting, she accused the CEC of being ‘arrogant’ and claimed that the Election Commission was targeting West Bengal under the influence of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Banerjee also alleged that the draft voter list had seen the removal of genuine voters’ names on a large scale and pointed out that special electoral roll observers and micro-observers had been appointed exclusively for West Bengal to monitor the revision process.
