Supreme Court Takes Cognizance of Life-Threatening Attack on Female Lawyer in Delhi

New Delhi, April 27: The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of a life-threatening attack on female lawyer Madhu Rajput, who practices at the Karkardooma Court in Delhi. This serious incident has raised alarm and prompted immediate hearings and significant orders from the court.

On the night of April 24, it is alleged that Madhu was attacked with a sharp weapon resembling a sword by her husband and in-laws. She sustained severe injuries to her head and body. Following the attack, she was confined in her office located in Sonia Vihar, which delayed her medical treatment. Three hospitals reportedly refused to admit her. It was only after receiving preliminary care that she was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences around 6 AM. Her condition remains critical.

The Supreme Court expressed deep concern over the incident. Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud’s bench remarked that the refusal of treatment by hospitals is extremely troubling. The court has directed police officials to locate the victim’s two minor daughters and ensure their safety. For now, the elder daughter will remain in the custody of her grandparents.

The court has ordered the investigating officer to conduct a thorough inquiry into the entire incident and submit a status report as soon as possible. Given the victim’s serious condition, the Supreme Court has instructed the National Legal Services Authority to release interim financial assistance for her treatment and the care of her daughters by tomorrow.

Chief Justice Chandrachud wished for the victim’s swift recovery and emphasized the necessity of ensuring safety for female lawyers. The Women’s Lawyers Association has also condemned the attack and called for all possible support for the victim.
