New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday issued notices to the central government and the University Grants Commission (UGC) while hearing petitions challenging the new UGC regulations. The opposition welcomed the Supreme Court’s stance and criticised the government over the issue.
At present, the Supreme Court has put a stay on the new UGC regulations and clarified that the next hearing will be held on March 19. Until then, the 2012 UGC regulations will remain in force.
Congress MP Pramod Tiwari welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to stay the new UGC rules, stating, “The Supreme Court has given its verdict, and I welcome it. However, maintaining peace among people and communities and preventing conflicts is the government’s responsibility. Instead, the government is creating discord on the basis of caste and religion, diverting people’s attention from real issues.”
Congress MP Ranjit Ranjan said, “There were some contradictions. Two points, ‘D’ and ‘B’, from the standing committee’s recommendations were included, but some points were overlooked. When presenting the UGC regulations, some aspects were not clearly addressed. The rights of every student must be protected, and no student should be left behind. There was also no clear explanation about what kind of discrimination would be considered or how it would be resolved.”
Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP JB Maather commented, “There have been protests across universities nationwide on this issue. The Supreme Court has surely taken note of the seriousness of these concerns and decided to stay the regulations. We will see what the Supreme Court says further.”
CPI(M) Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas said, “The UGC guidelines were a result of Supreme Court directions. In fact, the government had diluted them. These UGC guidelines need to be made stricter and should also apply to institutions like IITs, IIMs, AIIMS etc. I see no reason to stay them just because of some isolated controversies.”
