Supreme Court Stay Adds to ‘Jan Nayakan’ Release Uncertainty

New Delhi: The much-anticipated South Indian superstar Thalapathy Vijay’s film ‘Jan Nayakan’ has become the centre of a legal controversy, further delaying its release. Regarded as a significant project in Vijay’s career, the film’s launch has already faced multiple postponements and now the dispute has escalated to the Supreme Court.

Last week, the Madras High Court directed the issuance of a UA certificate for the film, ruling that the Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) did not have the authority to send the film to the revising committee. The court clarified that the Chairperson’s right to intervene ended once they recommended the certificate to be granted after necessary cuts.

Following this decision, the producers petitioned the court for an immediate release certificate. However, challenging the High Court’s order, the matter has now been taken to the Supreme Court. The petitioners argue that all certification procedures must be properly followed prior to release, and decisions regarding certification should remain open for review. The Supreme Court has not yet scheduled a hearing, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the film’s release.

‘Jan Nayakan’ is produced by KVN Productions and directed by H. Vinoth. Alongside Thalapathy Vijay, the film stars Pooja Hegde and Mamitha Baiju in prominent roles. The makers have planned a multilingual release across 22 countries. Advance bookings had already begun amid high audience enthusiasm and demand.

The certification dispute arose when a CBFC member filed a complaint to the Chairperson, stating objections had not been addressed before recommending a UA certificate. Consequently, the film was sent to the revising committee, causing repeated delays. The producers contended in court that the film had not been screened to any third party yet, and withholding the certificate based solely on the complaint was unfair and arbitrary.

While the Madras High Court’s order had cleared the way for the UA certificate and release, the Supreme Court challenge has introduced a new hurdle. The producers emphasise that further delay will impact their release plans and dampen audience excitement. They maintain that only minor cuts were recommended and these have been complied with, making the film’s release appropriate and justified.
