Mumbai, September 5 (Daily Kiran) : On September 5, Mumbai remembers the legendary music composer Salil Chowdhury on the anniversary of his passing. Actor Jackie Shroff took to Instagram to pay homage to Chowdhury, sharing a poignant black-and-white photo of the composer playing the piano. He captioned the post, “Remembering musical legend Salil Chowdhury on his death anniversary.”
Salil Chowdhury passed away on September 5, 1995, at the age of 69. Born on November 19, 1925, in Harinavi, Bengal Presidency, Chowdhury was much more than just a music composer. He was a lyricist, poet, writer, and a prominent figure in theater. Over his illustrious career, he composed music for films in 13 languages, including Hindi, Bengali, and Malayalam.
Chowdhury was adept at various instruments, including the flute, piano, and esraj. His first Bengali film as a composer was “Parivartan” in 1949, and he made his mark in Hindi cinema with Bimal Roy’s “Do Bigha Zamin” in 1953.
One of his most celebrated works came in 1958 with the soundtrack for “Madhumati,” featuring timeless songs like “Aaja Re Pardesi,” “Suhana Safar Aur Yeh Mausam Haseen,” “Dil Tadap Tadap Ke Keh Raha Hai,” and “Ghadi Ghadi Mora Dil Dhadke.” He continued to create memorable music with hits from films such as “Parakh,” “Chhaya,” “Kabuliwala,” “Anand,” and “Chhoti Si Baat.”
Throughout his career, Chowdhury collaborated with some of the biggest names in playback singing, including Lata Mangeshkar, Mukesh, Manna Dey, Kishore Kumar, and Asha Bhosle, crafting melodies that remain evergreen in Indian music history.
