Supreme Court Collegium Approves Appointment of Nine Lawyers as Judges of Calcutta High Court

New Delhi, May 12: The Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, has approved the appointment of nine lawyers as judges of the Calcutta High Court.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Collegium confirmed that during its meetings on May 11 and 12, it endorsed the proposals for the appointment of lawyers Indranil Roy, Aryak Dutta, Atarup Banerjee, Sandeep Kumar Dey, Partha Pratim Roy, Sudip Deb, Anuj Singh, Arjun Ray Mukherjee, and Rishad Medora as judges.

The statement read, “The Supreme Court Collegium has approved the appointment of the following lawyers as judges of the Calcutta High Court during its meetings on May 11 and 12, 2026.”

Following this, the Collegium listed the names of the nine lawyers who received approval for promotion to the bench.

The Supreme Court Collegium, chaired by the Chief Justice of India and comprising the most senior judges of the Supreme Court, is responsible for making recommendations related to appointments and transfers within the higher judiciary.

According to the Memorandum of Procedure (MoP) governing the appointment of High Court judges, the proposal for appointments is initiated by the Chief Justice of the relevant High Court in consultation with the two most senior judges of that court.

This recommendation is sent by the Chief Justice to the Chief Minister, who forwards it to the Governor. The Governor, in turn, sends the proposal, along with relevant information and documents, to the Central Minister of Law and Justice.

Subsequently, the central government acts on this proposal, which is then presented to the Chief Justice of India, who consults with the most senior judges of the Supreme Court to finalize the recommendation.

After the Collegium’s approval, the recommendation is sent to the central government. Appointments become effective once the President of India signs the appointment warrant and the Ministry of Justice issues a notification in the official gazette.
