Sunam, August 20: Discussions about a potential alliance between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) have gained momentum ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections. This speculation has been fueled by statements from SAD leader and Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal.
During an event commemorating the death anniversary of former SAD president Sant Harchand Singh Longowal in Sunam, Harsimrat Kaur Badal addressed the audience, emphasizing the need for Punjab’s development and the importance of cooperation from the central government.
She remarked on the demand for a skilled university, stating that these are just small steps. With the grace of Guru Sahib, if agreements similar to those in the past are formed, development initiatives from Delhi could reach Punjab, laying the groundwork for significant progress in the state.
However, Harsimrat Kaur Badal refrained from making any direct announcements regarding a possible alliance between the BJP and SAD. She avoided elaborating on the matter, asserting that it is not her role to make such declarations, and that everything will be revealed in due time.
Her remarks are being interpreted as a hint towards a potential political understanding between the BJP and Akali Dal. She noted that history shows that whenever the Shiromani Akali Dal has attempted to foster peace and brotherhood in Punjab, various small factions have emerged to weaken them. These groups, she claimed, are instigated by “outsiders” who have no attachment or sympathy for Punjab, only seeking to exploit and dominate the region.
The discussions about a possible alliance intensified following SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal’s recent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Subsequently, the Akali Dal expressed support for the swift implementation of women’s reservation and backed the central government’s proposal to increase the number of Lok Sabha seats.
