New Delhi, June 17: As preparations for Muharram unfold in Uttar Pradesh, political and social reactions are emerging in response to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath‘s statement that “Muharram is a time for mourning, not for display of power.” BJP MP Jagdambika Pal backed the Chief Minister’s directives, emphasizing that every individual has the right to celebrate their religious festivals, but each occasion carries its own dignity, tradition, and purpose.
In a conversation with the media, Jagdambika Pal remarked that Muharram is a festival of grief and mourning. Therefore, it should be celebrated in accordance with the sentiments and traditions that define its religious significance. He stated that if a festival holds special importance and form, it should be observed in that manner.
The BJP MP further noted that during any festival, it is crucial to ensure communal harmony and prevent any discomfort to any community or individual. He stressed that the purpose of festivals should be to unite people and strengthen brotherhood, rather than create an environment that negatively impacts others.
Recently, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath reviewed law and order, upcoming festivals, NEET exam preparations, and International Yoga Day arrangements via video conferencing in Lucknow. During this meeting, he clearly instructed officials not to permit any display of weapons during Muharram. He also called for a ban on the initiation of new traditions, loud DJs, and the uncontrolled use of drums and trumpets.
The Chief Minister additionally directed that the height of tazias should adhere to established standards and that all necessary arrangements should be made to maintain peace, security, and social harmony across the state.
