Sunil Chaurasia Claims Victory at Alpha Sports Academy Golf Championship 2026

Patna, March 27: Sunil Chaurasia made a remarkable comeback after a long injury layoff, winning the Alpha Sports Academy Golf Championship 2026, organized by the Patna Golf Club. He secured a hard-fought victory by just one shot.

Kolkata’s Sunil Chaurasia (71-65-73), nephew of the legendary SSP Chaurasia, maintained a steady performance in the final round, scoring 73 to clinch his first title. His total score for the week was seven-under 209. The 31-year-old’s win earned him a cash prize of ₹317,875, propelling him from 41st to 6th place in the DP World PGTI Nexgen ‘Order of Merit.’

Bipin Mukhiya (68-75-67) recorded the best score of the final day with a 67, moving up four spots to finish as the runner-up with a score of six-under 210. He received a check for ₹267,875, allowing him to leap from 7th to 1st place in the Nexgen Merit List, bringing his total earnings for the season to ₹528,688.

Divyesh Rana (68), Vinay Kumar Yadav (72), and Rajesh Kumar Gautam (74) tied for third place with a score of three-under 213. Among Patna’s professionals, Mo. Nawab performed best, finishing tied for 13th with a score of one-over 217.

Chaurasia, who equaled the tournament’s lowest score with a 65 on the second day, faced challenges on Thursday but remained patient until the end to secure his victory. His front-nine performance was mixed, featuring two birdies and two bogeys, ultimately leading him to emerge as the champion.

After his win, Sunil stated, “I had a good lead in the third round, so my plan for the final round was to play cautiously and capitalize on any birdie opportunities. Today wasn’t my best day, but I maintained my patience under pressure in the last nine holes and won the match.”

He added, “This victory boosts my confidence, especially after returning from a long injury break. I needed this to get my game back on track. I had been hitting the ball well in recent tournaments, but yesterday all aspects of my game came together, significantly increasing my confidence before the final round of this tournament in Patna. I will carry this confidence into the upcoming season.”

Amandeep Johal, CEO of the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI), remarked, “The successful hosting of the Alpha Sports Academy Golf Championship at the historic Patna Golf Club is a significant step for DP World PGTI Nexgen. The tournament showcased high-level competition and provided an excellent platform for emerging Indian professional players to display their talent.”
