IPL 2026: Chennai Super Kings Face Early Setbacks in Season Opener

New Delhi, March 31: Chennai Super Kings kicked off their IPL 2026 campaign with a disappointing loss. On Monday, they faced an 8-wicket defeat against Rajasthan Royals at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium. This opening match revealed several weaknesses in the Chennai squad that could complicate their journey this season.

One major concern is the lack of experience in the middle order. The absence of key players like Sanju Samson and Ruturaj, who fell cheaply, left the team struggling to stabilize their innings. The reliance on players like Ayush Mhatre and Matthew Short to build the innings seems unrealistic.

Although Sarfaraz has performed well in domestic cricket, his IPL record is not impressive. Youngsters Kartik Sharma and Prashant Veer lack the necessary experience. The only seasoned player in Chennai’s middle order appears to be Shivam Dube, who may not be able to shoulder the team’s burden alone in every match.

Additionally, the team is missing a strong finisher this season. Dewald Brevis could take on this role, but his injury raises concerns about his recovery time. MS Dhoni will also be unavailable for two weeks. While the team might consider Prashant Veer and Urvil Patel for this position, both lack sufficient experience.

Chennai’s bowling attack poses another significant issue. Matt Henry’s T20 record is not encouraging, as evidenced in the first match where he conceded 40 runs in just 3 overs. The team hopes for strong performances from Khaleel Ahmed and Anshul Kamboj.

Though Khaleel has the ability to take wickets, he can also be quite expensive. In the spin department, the team has only Noor Ahmad and Akil Hussain as notable bowlers. However, they cannot field both foreign players in the playing eleven simultaneously. Noor struggled to contain runs against Rajasthan, leaving Chennai with pressing questions that the management must address promptly.
