Ashwini Bhide Appointed as BMC Commissioner: A New Era in Mumbais Governance

Mumbai, March 31: A new chapter in women’s leadership has begun in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) with the appointment of Ashwini Bhide as the new Commissioner. Mumbai’s Mayor, Ritu Tawde, expressed her delight over this historic appointment.

In a post on the social media platform X, Mayor Tawde described it as “a new era in the history of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.”

She congratulated Bhide, stating, “Heartfelt congratulations on being appointed as the Commissioner of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. She is the first woman to hold this position in BMC’s history, which is a matter of immense pride for all of us. This recognition of women’s power is not just administrative but a source of pride for all of Mumbai.”

Mayor Tawde further added, “With Ashwini Bhide’s extensive experience in the metro project and her disciplined work approach, Mumbai’s development will undoubtedly reach new heights. As a woman mayor and a woman commissioner, we firmly believe that together we will realize the dreams of a ‘smart and safe Mumbai’ for its residents. Wishing her all the best for her successful journey ahead!”

On Tuesday, the Maharashtra government appointed senior IAS officer Ashwini Bhide (1995 batch) as the new Commissioner of BMC, following the retirement of Bhushan Gagare.

With this appointment, Bhide has made history as the first woman to lead India’s richest municipal body.

Other contenders for the BMC Commissioner position included Aseem Gupta, Anil Diggikar, Milind Mhaiskar, and Sanjay Mukherjee. However, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis chose Bhide, giving preference to her over some senior officials.

Known as the “Metro Woman,” Ashwini Bhide has successfully advanced the crucial Line-3 (Aqua Line) of the Mumbai Metro. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she played a vital role as an Additional Commissioner in contact tracing and hospital management at BMC.
