Sukhoi-57: A Leap Forward for Indias Air Force, Says Defense Expert Prful Bakshi

New Delhi, June 7: The discussion surrounding Russia’s offer of the advanced Sukhoi-57 (SU-57) fighter jet to India has intensified. Defense expert Prful Bakshi believes that if India collaborates with Russia on the joint development and production of the Sukhoi-57, it will not only enhance the strength of the Indian Air Force but also significantly benefit indigenous defense technology.

Bakshi emphasized that India currently requires advanced defense technologies the most. He highlighted the importance of engine technology, avionics, cockpit design, glass cockpit, and other modern defense systems as key necessities for the country. Specifically, he pointed out the urgent need for engine technology. While the United States is supplying the GE-404 engine for the Tejas fighter jet, India has yet to fully develop an indigenous fighter jet engine.

Discussing the features of the Sukhoi-57, Bakshi noted that it is considered one of the most modern fighter jets in the world. It is a twin-engine aircraft with stealth capabilities and exceptional agility. Additionally, it can achieve supersonic flight, exceeding the speed of sound. He stated that such aircraft are essential given the demands of modern warfare.

The defense expert mentioned that countries like Algeria already possess the Sukhoi-57, and its supply may have already commenced. He pointed out that its most significant attributes are its advanced technology and combat capabilities, which set it apart from other fighter jets.

Commenting on Russia’s offer, Bakshi remarked that Russia is well aware of India’s need for such advanced fighter aircraft. He noted that the Indian Air Force requires approximately 42.5 to 43 squadrons, while currently, it has only 29 squadrons available, indicating a shortfall of 13 to 14 squadrons.
