Rise in Hate Crimes Against Sikhs and Hindus in the U.S. Reported in 2025

Washington, August 19: Law enforcement agencies in the United States reported 189 hate crimes against Sikhs and 32 against Hindus in 2025, according to a recent FBI report.

These figures were extracted from the FBI’s annual crime statistics, which detail hate crimes motivated by religious, racial, ethnic, and other biases. During the year, a total of 2,703 single-bias hate crimes were recorded. Of these, 7% were linked to anti-Sikh bias, equating to approximately 189 incidents. Anti-Hindu bias accounted for 1.2%, or about 32 crimes.

Among religious hate crimes, anti-Jewish bias represented the largest portion at 62.3%. Anti-Muslim bias followed at 9.6%, with anti-Sikh bias making up 7%.

The FBI also provided victim statistics. Out of 2,798 victims of religious hate crimes, 6.9% were victims of anti-Sikh bias, which translates to around 193 individuals. Cases of anti-Hindu bias represented 1.2%, corresponding to 34 victims.

The report did not classify Indian Americans as a distinct racial or ethnic group. Depending on circumstances and local authorities’ classifications, victims of Indian descent could fall under categories such as anti-Asian, anti-Hindu, anti-Sikh, or other biases. Thus, it is not possible to determine how many Indian Americans were victims of hate crimes in 2025 from the national summary.

The FBI noted that there were 7,200 single-bias hate crimes based on race, ethnicity, or ancestry. Of these, 5.8% were motivated by anti-Asian bias, equating to about 418 crimes.

Among the 7,427 victims of hate crimes based on race, ethnicity, or ancestry, 5.9% were targeted due to anti-Asian bias, amounting to approximately 438 victims. The report did not break down this category by national origin.

In total, agencies reported 10,881 hate crime incidents in 2025, which included 13,026 offenses. These cases involved 13,438 victims and 9,509 known offenders.

The number of reported incidents decreased from 11,679 in 2024 to 10,881 in 2025, marking a decline of about 6.8%. The number of offenses fell from 13,683 to 13,026, while the number of victims decreased from 14,243 to 13,438.

The FBI calculated a 7% decrease in reported incidents, dropping from 11,404 in 2024 to 10,606 in 2025.

Data for anti-Sikh, anti-Hindu, or anti-Asian crimes for 2024 was not provided, making year-over-year comparisons for these communities impossible from the published national summary.

Of the 12,567 single-bias crimes recorded in 2025, 57.3% were based on race, ethnicity, or ancestry. Religious bias accounted for 21.5%, followed by sexual orientation at 14.6%.

Approximately 66.6% of all hate crimes were directed against individuals. Among these, 31.5% involved property damage, while 1.9% were classified as societal crimes.

Crimes against individuals included 43.1% threats and 35.8% simple assaults. Among property-related hate crimes, 73.3% involved vandalism, damage, or destruction.

The FBI’s hate crime data collection received information from 16,791 law enforcement agencies, covering 95.3% of the U.S. population. Agencies reported data for periods ranging from one to twelve months, with 3,067 agencies reporting at least one hate crime incident.
