New Delhi, June 8: A powerful earthquake measuring 6.4 in magnitude struck the Philippines early Monday morning. The tremor was recorded at 5:18 AM local time.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake’s epicenter was located at a latitude of 5.605 degrees north and a longitude of 125.408 degrees east. It occurred at a depth of 79 kilometers. The epicenter was approximately 556 kilometers north-northeast of Kotamobagu, Indonesia.
Residents in the southern islands of the Philippines felt the quake. Local authorities are currently assessing the situation, with reports of tremors coming from various regions.
Despite the earthquake’s depth of 79 kilometers, its impact was notable, causing panic among residents in cities and villages. Many took to social media to share their experiences, stating they were in bed when they suddenly felt strong shaking. In some areas, walls of homes shook, and reports of falling objects surfaced. However, there have been no official reports of casualties or tsunami warnings at this time.
The Philippines and Indonesia are located in the ‘Ring of Fire,’ an area known for its frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to the ongoing movement of tectonic plates. Several moderate to high-intensity earthquakes have been recorded in this region over the past few years.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has urged the public to remain vigilant. The institute indicated that aftershocks cannot be ruled out. Citizens are advised to take necessary precautions and follow local authorities’ instructions. Teams are being dispatched to affected areas to assess any damage.
