Shillong, June 3: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced on Wednesday that the upcoming annual meeting of the Northeast Council (NEC) will focus on enhancing regional cooperation and reviewing the implementation of recommendations from various task forces related to the development of the northeastern region.
Speaking to reporters in Shillong, Sangma mentioned that the Union Home Minister will arrive in the state capital on Wednesday evening. The full session of the NEC, scheduled for Thursday, will include the participation of chief ministers and governors from northeastern states.
The meeting will address reports prepared by task forces established to study critical areas for the region’s development. Sangma noted that different states in the Northeast have been assigned leadership roles in tourism, youth affairs, trade, and other significant sectors.
He emphasized that Meghalaya will advocate for the Northeast to be developed as a unified tourism destination, rather than promoting individual states separately. “We want the Northeast to be presented as a single tourism destination, allowing visitors to easily experience multiple states and attractions,” he stated.
According to the Chief Minister, the meeting is also expected to involve extensive discussions on regional development and policy issues. During this time, the Union Home Minister and the Minister for Development of Northeastern Region (DoNER) may raise various topics.
Sangma also shared that the Union Health Minister will visit Meghalaya on June 5, and there is a possibility that the Union Finance Minister will come to Shillong within the next ten days. He confirmed his participation in a meeting of the NITI Aayog chaired by the Prime Minister on June 11.
Notably, this NEC meeting is taking place at a time when the central government is emphasizing regional integration, improved connectivity, and coordinated development among northeastern states.
