Thiruvananthapuram, July 22: Tensions escalated in Thiruvananthapuram following a BJP march to the KPCC headquarters in response to Congress protests outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence in New Delhi. The march, led by BJP state president and legislator Rajeev Chandrasekhar, was organized as a counter to the Congress demonstration against the central government.
As the protesters approached the KPCC headquarters, police deployed water cannons to disperse the crowd. Rajeev Chandrasekhar was among those affected by the water cannons, alongside other senior BJP leaders.
The BJP accused the police of assaulting a female party worker during the protests. Addressing the crowd, Chandrasekhar asserted that the BJP would not allow democracy to be undermined, claiming that the Congress protest in New Delhi was an attempt to attack the Prime Minister.
In response, KPCC president and state power minister Sani Joseph accused the BJP of deliberately inciting confrontation by marching to the Congress headquarters. He stated that the BJP’s demonstration aimed to distract from public outrage over alleged excesses by Delhi police and central security forces against students and Congress leaders, including opposition leader Rahul Gandhi.
Joseph emphasized that while everyone has the democratic right to protest, it should not be used as a license for violence or confrontation. He claimed that the BJP was attempting to cover up its political failures and anti-people policies through such provocative actions. He reaffirmed Congress’s commitment to uphold democratic values and the rule of law.
Furthermore, he warned that no one should believe they can intimidate Congress into abandoning its stance on protecting the rights and welfare of the public through threats or attacks. Joseph concluded by stating that there is no place for the politics of violence in Kerala.
