Gandhinagar, July 22: The Gujarat government has ramped up emergency preparations and rescue operations due to ongoing heavy rainfall in parts of South Gujarat. High-level reviews were conducted in the districts of Surat, Valsad, Navsari, and Dang. Residents in vulnerable areas were evacuated, and disaster relief teams were deployed.
Director General of Police (DGP) GS Malik chaired a video conference from the police headquarters with all police commissioners, district superintendents, range heads, and commanders of the State Reserve Police (SRP) group. The conference focused on assessing the law and order situation and the impact of heavy rainfall in South Gujarat.
During the meeting, Malik instructed police officials to maintain peace, security, and safety across the state. He emphasized the need to protect government properties and offices while remaining vigilant.
He also directed officials to enhance cyber monitoring to prevent the spread of rumors and AI-generated fake videos in light of the current situation.
The meeting reviewed the rainfall conditions in the affected districts of South Gujarat. Police personnel were instructed to be ready to assist local administrations in evacuating residents from low-lying areas and conducting relief and rescue operations.
SRP teams and local police were advised to ensure public safety despite adverse weather, maintain smooth traffic flow, and keep emergency services operational.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has increased its deployment at sensitive locations in coordination with civil administration. In anticipation of rising flood risks, the sixth battalion of NDRF stationed a team in Surat’s Parvat Patiya and another team at the South Zone office of Surat Municipal Corporation to bolster emergency preparations.
In Valsad district, NDRF teams were deployed in sensitive low-lying areas, including Hanuman Bagda, Darudiya Ward, and Taria Ward, to monitor the situation and respond to any flood or waterlogging emergencies.
Rescue operations were also conducted in Valsad district. Sixteen passengers stranded in a private bus on the Koparli-Vapi road near Amheti in Nanaponda taluka were safely rescued through the joint efforts of local police, the Amheti Gram Panchayat, and local villagers.
After the rescue, barricades were erected on both sides of the road as a precaution, and the route was closed to vehicles.
