Strengthening India-Myanmar Naval Cooperation: Admiral Tripathis Key Meeting

Nepal, May 5: Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi met with Admiral Tin Win, Commander-in-Chief of the Myanmar Navy, in the capital of Myanmar, Naypyidaw. The discussions focused on enhancing the growing relationship between the two nations, particularly in maritime cooperation, training, capacity building, mobile training teams (MTTs), hydrography, and interoperability.

The Indian Navy spokesperson shared on the social media platform ‘X’ that Admiral Tripathi’s visit included a meeting with Admiral Tin Win on May 4. Upon his arrival, the Myanmar Navy honored him with a guard of honor. This meeting is a significant step towards strengthening the ties between the two navies and enhancing maritime security in the Bay of Bengal.

Both sides emphasized advancing India-Myanmar relations, particularly in areas like maritime cooperation, training, capacity building, mobile training teams, hydrography, and improving interoperability. They also discussed the need for a shared perspective on maritime security and the importance of addressing growing threats at sea.

On Monday, Admiral Tripathi also met with Myanmar’s Defense Minister General Tun Aung to discuss the current state of bilateral relations. His four-day visit is set to conclude on Tuesday.

The spokesperson noted that during the visit, Admiral Tripathi reviewed the defense relations between the two countries with General Tun Aung and discussed future priorities. They highlighted the significance of India-Myanmar defense cooperation for regional peace and security.

The discussions also covered ongoing activities and new avenues for enhancing collaboration, demonstrating a commitment to strengthening and progressing bilateral relations.

On Sunday, Admiral Tripathi met with Rear Admiral Aung Aung Naing, head of the Myanmar Navy’s Central Naval Command, and Rear Admiral Khun Aung Kyaw, head of the Training Command. They discussed enhancing naval cooperation, strengthening defense partnerships, and increasing operational collaboration.

Both sides also explored new methods for training cooperation and future joint efforts. The spokesperson reported that Admiral Tripathi was welcomed with a guard of honor at the Central Naval Command headquarters in Yangon, where he met with Rear Admiral Aung Aung Naing and Rear Admiral Khun Aung Kyaw.

The meetings addressed issues such as naval cooperation, defense partnerships, operational coordination, maritime security, and creating a secure maritime environment. Emphasis was placed on enhancing training cooperation and interoperability.

Admiral Tripathi also visited the Myanmar Naval Training Command, where he handed over several projects completed with India’s assistance. The spokesperson stated that he was briefed on the training arrangements at the command and discussed ongoing programs and the role of mobile training teams. Admiral Tripathi presented projects like the containerized small arms simulator and rigid inflatable boats, which will aid in enhancing maritime security in the Bay of Bengal under the ‘Ocean’ vision.

According to the Indian Navy, this visit further strengthens the long-standing friendly relations between India and Myanmar, based on mutual respect, trust, and a shared commitment to maintaining peace and security in the Indian Ocean region.
