Kathmandu, August 26: Flash floods that struck the border areas near China early Wednesday have caused significant devastation in Nepal. In response to this natural disaster, Prime Minister Balendra Shah convened a high-level meeting to discuss rescue and relief operations. The Prime Minister’s office released a statement regarding this gathering.
According to the statement, Prime Minister Shah engaged with federal lawmakers from the affected areas to assess the situation caused by the flooding of the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa.
During a meeting held at Singha Durbar with lawmakers from Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, and Chitwan, discussions focused on the damage caused by the floods, the condition of settlements in coastal areas, and ongoing rescue and relief efforts.
Earlier, the Prime Minister had called for a meeting of the National Council for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management to gather updates on the current situation in flood-affected areas and the progress of rescue, search, and relief operations.
During discussions with the lawmakers from the affected regions, Prime Minister Shah emphasized the government’s full commitment to ensuring the safety and relief of affected citizens.
The statement indicated that relevant departments were given clear instructions to exercise extra caution in lower coastal areas and to promptly relocate displaced individuals to safe locations.
PM Shah urged everyone to contribute to the rescue, search, and relief efforts for citizens affected by the floods during this challenging time.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced it would send essential health and relief supplies to flood victims. According to local media, after discussions with Health and Food Safety Minister Nisha Mehta, the health ministry reported that the organization is dispatching basic medicines and health equipment for 1,000 people. Additionally, 15 emergency tents, each measuring 24 square meters, are being sent to the affected areas.
The ministry stated that 100 emergency beds have been allocated for flood victims at Bir Hospital and the Trauma Center in Kathmandu. It was also reported that three injured individuals have been rescued and brought to Kathmandu.
Emergency health services are being coordinated with the Federal Hospital in Kathmandu, the Blood Transfusion Center, health ministries of Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, Nepal Red Cross, Lions, and Nepal Scouts.
